Fluffy

In the middle of the ocean it started slowly. If seen it would probably have been mistaken for the frothing of the waves at first. Small bubbles, formed at the ocean bottom, floated up and broke at the top. The bubbles gradually increased in size until the entire area was like a huge boiling cauldron in the middle of the vast ocean. In the center where the boiling was most fierce, the wind started to pick up. It steadily increased until it was almost at hurricane velocity. In the midst of the storm something shot out of the water and flew into the air. In minutes the wind died down to what be expected on a regular blustery day. The boiling stopped entirely. The thing that shot out of the water looked down at where fate had tossed it. It sat there for a minute before taking off towards the west. As elusive as the wind that followed it wherever it went. It searched, invisible to all that saw it.

“You seen Fluffy mom?” John cried storming into the living room.

“No!” his mother called from the kitchen “I haven't' seen your cat all day! Don't worry about her now though. Come in and eat your dinner.”

Out in the backyard Fluffy carefully stalked a ladybug. She slowly snuck up on it and pounced. The beetle merely flew to a safer perch some feet away. Fluffy had already forgotten it in the seconds it left. She sat down on her haunches and carefully proceeded to preen herself. Fluffy sensed someone approaching and started sniffing the air to see who it was. Besides the wind that was starting to pick up Fluffy couldn't hear or smell anything near her. Her sixth sense however was telling her vividly that someone was near her. Confused Fluffy went wild, screeching, attacking anything that moved. Sensing the presence right next to her, she arched her back and started hissing at where she felt it was. The only response that she could tell of to her efforts was the wind starting to blow ever so much harder. Fluffy felt herself start to lose consciousness. Unable to fight it she gradually calmed down and closed her eyes until she was gone in a sleep that none have ever waken from. Fluffys body however took a few cautious steps, it's eyes shining with intelligence.

John rushed out the back door slamming it shut behind him.

“Fluffy!” he called “Fluffy!”

It stretched and started walking around. The sun shone down on it's back, and it enjoyed the warmth it provided. It looked around at its surroundings and noticed the beauty in a nearby rose. It's sense of smell brought forth images of rich black soil, cooking meat, more flowers. It enjoyed these new senses and images. It felt more alive than ever before. It could run, climb, smell, taste, stretch, see. It could now do so many things it couldn't before. A whole new world had opened before its eyes. Yet what it got from this cat wasn't enough. It needed more. It had to see it all, taste it all, touch it all. Slowly a plan started forming in its mind on how to do it all too.

John searched all around in his backyard and finally found her in his mothers rose garden.

“Fluffy! You bad cat.” he scolded “You know you shouldn't be in there.”

Fluffy just sat there looking a little dazed. He picked her up and started petting her. She started to lick his hand.

“I love you too, Fluffy.” he laughed.

He looked into Fluffy’s bright green eyes, Fluffy stared back. Looking into her eyes he saw something in them. There was a strange glimmer in her eyes he had never seen before. It unnerved him, and he almost dropped her, but it disappeared right then, and he figured it was just his imagination. He carried Fluffy over to a lawn chair and sat down, still holding and petting her. Fluffy's eyes never left his face. The wind slowly started to pick up, blowing through Johns hair. It had been a hot day and the breeze felt good. He looked down at Fluffy again and looked in her eyes once more. That glimmer had returned and although it was uncanny the way she seemed to be aware of everything around her, it didn't bother him as much anymore. He continued to stare into his cats eyes while the wind picked up even more. He thought about getting his kite, but somehow he didn't have the energy. The wind continued to blow ever so harder. A branch on the neighbors' tree fell down, but he didn't notice. All he could see was his cats bright green eyes. As the wind started to fade so did John, until both were completely gone.

It stood up and looked around. It was different in here, yet still enjoyable. The plan would work, it could fulfill its dream of seeing the entire world.

John and Fluffy both stood up, stretched, and walked over to the house where Johns mother was. A look of knowing in their eyes.

“Hey mom!” John called out. “Look what me and Fluffy found.”

He quietly closed the door behind him. The house was silent for a minute before the wind started to pick up. While outside, it was still calm.
