Lii Marde and his companions had slowly been making his way to Zilargo in his rowboat ever since they had escaped Sharn. By the time he reached the border with Zilargo he wasn't surprised to see abandoned villages, assuming they had left due to the mourning. However as he continued to move east he was surprised to find that every village he encountered was abandoned, even some quite large and very far from the border with the Mournland. Eventually he began encountering refugees and learned that the Triumvirate had ordered the complete evacuation of the entire nation. In the confusion of the evacuaion the Zil assumed that Lii was just another human resident of Zilargo.

Lii followed the refugees to Trolanport where most of the ships were. He saw many ships taking on refugees, most of them warships flying the Lhazaar flag. He also noticed a large number of merchant vessels flying the flag of Breland along with a mix of other vessels from other nations in Khorvaire. Most of the gnomes were clamoring to board the warships feeling their armaments made them safer then the regular merchant vessels. Lii, who was very short on money, decided it wasn't worth the extra cost to pay for the security of a warship and ended up taking one of the merchant vessels. The journey was long, but uneventful, and he ended up safely in Stormreach.

When Moriarty's fleet arrived at the Zil coast to begin raiding they were surprised at all the activity. Rather then immediately raid Moriarty had the fleet commander find out what was going on. They quickly learned about the evactuation and how the Zil were willing to pay well for passage to Xen'drick because of it.

Moriarty gave orders to cancel the planned raid and instead have the pirates hire themselves out, they would get the same amount of money but without any danger. Because he was greedy, Moriarty had the captains hire themselves out as transports to the Zil, and get paid for it. Once the the Zil refugees and their belongings were on board they would sail out of sight of the coast and any other non-Lhazaar ships, then kill the Zil and dump their bodies overboard. The Zil belongings were then taken to a deserted island and offloaded before the ships would return back to Zilargo to hire themselves out as transports for another load of Zil that they would kill and loot again. The captains kept doing this until it was obvious there was only one or two loads left. They then stole the belongings of the last group but kept the Zil themselves alive. The last load of Zil they took to Wyvernskull and sold into slavery for an even further profit. The captains then loaded the most valuable treasures that had been stored on the islands into their holds and returned back to the Lhazaar Principalities pleased with the massive amount of loot that they'd stolen.
