The Final Sun

Main Page

Long long ago, in the age before television, the sun was different then the one we have now. The sun we have now is actually the fifth one the gods created. Originally the gods would assign one of themselves to hold this very honorable position. It didn't matter what their original duties had been, the fourth sun was a water goddess for example, the sun was vital in bringing light and warmth to the earth. Unfortunately the gods were not completely immortal and could be killed, even one fulfilling the duties of the sun, which is why there have been so many of them. The death of the sun was always a big problem, not only for the people on earth, but for the gods as well too. When the sun died it would always create destruction and chaos. As a previous water goddess, when the fourth sun died the entire earth was flooded and the human race was almost killed. Only one family managed to survive the flooding by climbing the highest mountain and staying there until the waters went down. Because of this the gods decided that they would not allow anything like this to happen again. They decided to make it so that the next sun could not die, they also decided to create two suns so there would always be light the entire time and in case something happened to one of them. Unfortunately the only way they could make a sun that couldn't die was by sacrificing themselves. Unlike all the previous suns these would not be truly alive or even conscious after the transformation, but they also would be the sun forever and never go out. They discussed among themselves who should become the new suns, no one really wanted to sacrifice themselves. Finally the god of snails volunteered to be the sun. He was one of the least important gods and wanted the honor of being the sun. No one else though was willing to volunteer themselves. After further discussion they chose Nana, the unsightly one, as the second sacrifice. Nana didn't want to die, she didn't even care about honor like the others, but agreed since she wasn't the goddess of anything like the others that she was the best choice. The next day the gods came together for the sacrifice. They made a huge bonfire and brought the god of snails and Nana before the fire. The god of snails had dressed himself up in the fanciest and richest clothes he had, Nana just had on a small thin dress. The gods pointed to the god of snails and said “Jump”. He came to the fire but when he saw flames he couldn't do it. The gods again told him to jump and the cowardly god of snails stepped back away from the fire refusing to leap into the flames. Angry, the gods pointed to Nana and told her to jump. Nana closed her eyes, thought of all the people she would help by becoming the sun, and leaped into the heart of the fire where the flames were highest. The god of snails, ashamed by his cowardice and fearful of the honor he would lose jumped into the fire, but off to the side where the ash was thick. Suddenly an eagle swooped out of the sky into the fire. The eagle flew out with it's wings barely singed and in it's beak it carried a brilliant blazing ball of fire and placed it in the sky. Then a hawk flew into the fire, when it flew out it was charred black. In it's beak was a dull ball of ash which was also placed in the sky. While the gods were happy with the first sun, they were disappointed by the second one which hardly provided any light at all and even went out from time to time. In anger one of the gods picked up a rabbit that happened to be nearby and threw it at the ball of ash we now call the moon. When the moon is full you can still see the indentation the rabbit made when it hit the moon.
