How the Mosquito Came To Be

Long long ago, in the age before television, a horrible giant lived on the Earth. He was especially fond of eating humans. He would chase them down and when he caught them he would eat their bones and drink their blood. The people were terrified of him and said “Unless we can get rid of this giant none of us will be left.”

One man, a warrior of the Tlingit tribe, said “I think I know how to kill the monster,” and he went to a trail that the giant frequently traveled. There he lay down and pretended to be dead.

Soon the giant came along and seeing the warrior lying on the ground picked him up and carried him to his home thinking what a tasty meal he would make. The man continued to pretend to be dead so that the giant would not know he was alive.

When the giant reached his home he set the warrior down and then realizing there was no firewood left to go get some. When the giant left the warrior jumped up and grabbed the giants knife which was sharper then any knife people could make then. He then waited for the giant to return. The giants son soon came in and the man jumped him from behind and put the knife to his throat.

“Tell me where your fathers heart is or I will kill you now!” the warrior demanded.

The giants son was scared and said “His heart is in his left heel.”

Just then the giants left foot appeared in the entrance and without hesitating the warrior plunged the knife into the heel. The monster screamed and fell down dead. The son ran away from the powerful warrior that had just killed his father.

Although dead the monster still spoke “Though you may have killed me, I will never stop feasting on your people!”

“Thats what you think!” said the warrior. “I will make sure that you never harm us again!”

He then took the knife and cut the giants body up into little pieces, he then took the pieces and burned them up in the fire. He then took the burnt ashes and threw them into the air for the winds to scatter away.

He then heard the giants voice laughing “I’ll continue to drink your blood until the end of time!”

Each of the bits of ash then became a mosquito and to this day the giant still drinks the blood of people though it’s more of annoyance then a threat now.
