An Empire Divided

Immediately after The Lurching Tower fell, Moriary contacted one of his agents and got teleported to The Mror Hold. He had information that Thrane was almost certainly going to declare holy war on The Lurching Tower and he didn't want to get involved in the battle. He didn't mention any of this to any other character and just vanished.

Karabela spent a few days drilling the Militia repairing the combat damage to the commanders station, and settling in as leader. A few days after taking The Lurching Tower Karabela found a palantir that for some reason was tied directly to The Lord of Blades. Karabela reported on what had happened. The Lord of Blades was pleased and told Karabela he was being promoted to 2nd in command, subjet only to The Lord of Blades himself. The Lord of Blades also granted Karabela the name of Blade in honor of his new position. The Lord of Blades told Blade that he has troops ready to reinforce The Lurching Tower if necessary however the city of Vathirond is in the way and would need to be eliminated first. The Lord of Blades also told Blade that his priority must be obtaining the services of a human named Merrix D'Cannith who lives in Sharn and has knowledge on how to repair the damaged creation forge the Lord of Blades as been using and bring to full productivity. With a fully working creation forge the Lord of Blades would be able build an army quickly to swarm across the world. The Lord of Blades said he doesn't care how Blade reaches Sharn and the services of Merrix, whether stealth, conquest, or some other tactic so long as it's done. Karabela started reviewing maps to decide the best course of action.

Zergiot hung around at The Lurching Tower a few days resting and recovering from the recent battles. He saw how Blade seemed to building up an empire and the morning Blade found the palantir he decided to leave. He felt that the militia were too weak to stand up to the rest of the Brelish army that must surely be on it's way and his cowardice ran out. He took a horse from the stables and rode out the front gates. As he did so he passed a very muscular person dressed as a primitive warrior with a fresh, still bloody, head tied to his waist walk in that Zergiot had never seen before. This new person paid little attention to Zergiot and seemed pleased with himself. Zergiot headed west and made his way to Starilaskur, his plan was to travel west until he encountered Brelish troops, claim to have escaped the massacre at The Lurching Tower, and hopefully be a hero for warning and providing intel to Breland. It took him a few days to get there and didn't see anyone else on the road until the day he reached Starilaskur.

Blade met with Buddah's Buddy, the warrior with the bloody head attached to his waist Zergiot had noticed as he was leaving. Buddy hadn't recognized Zergiot as a wizard due to Zergiot being in full plate. Buddy was looking for a war to fight, and wizards to kill, Blade let Buddy know he was starting a holy war and if Buddy stayed with him that Buddy would have his fill of war. Having looked over the maps and considering options he decided to go to a nearby lightning rail line just a little to the south of The Lurching Tower. His plan was to capture a lightning rail train and use it to make a sneak attack on Vathirond. Once Vathirond was open and Blade received warforged reinforcements from the Bladelands he would then use the lightning rail to move his troops as close to Sharn as he could get then raid the city in an attempt to capture Merrix D'Cannith. He brought the militia together and announced to them that he had received orders from his god and that he was taking a force south to capture the lightning rail and then moving east to capture Vathirond. A large part of the militia came together and one of them stepped forward announcing that he was in charge of the militia and also taking charge of The Lurching Tower. Blade used Lords Presence to try and dominate the militia and hopefully the leader who was trying to start a coup as far as Blade was concerned. The leader was affected by Blade's power however as soon as he appeared to be a little bit unsure of himself another militia member killed him and claimed that he was the real leader and the dead man was a decoy. While the new leader saying this he seemed a little nervous and seeing his hesitation a 3rd man killed him and claimed to be the true leader. Blade noticed that this new 'leader' kept glancing into the large group of militia, apparently looking for secret signals, but Blade couldn't tell who he was taking his queues from. The 'leader' said he would allow Blade to stay as a superior officer but that ultimately The Lurching Tower was his. Blade felt it was blasphemy for a warforged such as him to be taking orders from a human however he knew killing the 'leader' would just bring up another decoy and if he continued fighting too much either he or the entire militia would end up dead. He decided it was best to allow the 'leader' to take charge so long as he can continue to use the militia to fulfill the Lord of Blades' will. The leader said that Blades idea to capture the lightning rail first then move on to Vathirond was a good one and he should do so. Most of the militia would remain behind to guard The Lurching Tower but Dave, Buddy, and about 25 militia soldiers would go with Blade. They gathered up their supplies and began marching.

The morning Zergiot reached Starilaskur he saw a shady figure walking the opposite direction. As they reached each other, the shady figure stopped Zergiot and told him he had a message for him. The message was from Moriarty and told Zergiot that the goblins living here on the verge of rebellion and when he reaches Starilaskur that he should go to "Little Darguun" which is the unofficial name of the goblin section of the city. Zergiot seemed skeptical and said he had other plans. Out of nowhere a poisoned arrow hit the shady figure, instantly killing him. Attached to it was a note that strongly "suggested" not going to Little Darguun would be a bad idea. Although Zergiot was scared of getting involved with another rebellion against the Brelish military he was more scared of getting assassinated. So after entering Starilaskur he made his way to Little Darguun. As he went in he noticed a large amount of guards surrounding that section of the city. They didn't stop him but warned him that the goblins were restless and some humans had been lynched in there recently. Zergiot went into Little Darguun anyways. He quickly noticed that there were no other races visible besides goblins, hobgoblins and the occasional bugbear in there. He also noticed that all the goblinoids were focused on him and seemed hostile but didn't actually attack. He eventually came upon a square that seemed to be a central place for the area. He went up to a random goblin and asked him where their leaders were. The goblin didn't answer directly but he glanced to a nearby tavern. Zergiot took that as enough of an answer and entered the tavern.

It was only a few hours march for Blade and his platoon to reach the lightning rail. There was a small station located there to service The Lurching Tower. It appeared to be empty from a distance. Blade had the militia spread out and surround the station in case it was a trap. Blade then suggested that he and Buddy go in as if they were just armed travelers since they weren't dressed like militia. On the march from The Lurching Tower Dave and Buddy had quickly made friends as their loud boisterous personalities got along well and they appreciated each others physical strength. Although Dave wasn't invited he followed along not wanting to be left behind by Buddy. Inside the station was empty except for single clerk behind the counter who looked at the group nervously.
"Can I help you?" he asked.
Buddy pushed his way forward towards the clerk in a threatening manner saying "Yeah, you can..." but he was cut off as the clerk pulled a knife out of nowhere and stabbed him.
The knife was apparently poisoned as Buddy immediately collapsed. Seeing his friend hurt Dave reacted immediately and smashed in the clerks head. Blade was a little concerned about Buddy's imminent death as he felt Buddy would make a useful tool like Dave but he knew there was nothing he could do about it. Although Buddy was still alive he could feel the poison killing him. He thought that maybe the assassin would keep an antidote on him in case of emergency and searching the clerks body found a small unmarked vial. Knowing he had little to lose Buddy drank it. He immediately began feeling better but was still very weak and ill. Blade had one of the militia soldiers put Buddy on the back of a horse and take him back to The Lurching Tower to recuperate.

As Zergiot entered the tavern it instantly quieted down, with all eyes on him. He saw more then a few of the goblinoids looking at him fingering their weapons.
One goblin looked at him more intensely then the others for a little bit then his eyes went wide, "It's Zergiot!" he exclaimed.
The other goblinoids looked at Zergiot then at a wanted poster Zergiot hadn't noticed until then and back again.
"Why so it is!" another goblin agreed "You have guts just walking into town after what people say you did to that army, but someone who fights the king is welcome to drink here".
Zergiot took a look at the wanted posters and saw while there were drawings and descriptions of him, Blade, Moriarty, and Dave he was the only one specifically named. Apparently no one knew the names of any of the others in the party so be default he had become considered the leader. The goblins invited him to sit at a table where a number of older goblins, hobgoblins and bugbears were sitting who were introduced as the elders of Little Darguun. Enjoying the attention he was getting from the goblins he exaggerated his role of what happened at The Lurching Tower so that it sounded like it was all planned out and he was the leader. From the goblins he learned about the rumor that King Boranel was being working with a Cult of the Dragon Below which the goblins treated like fact. He also got the sense from the goblins that they had another reason for wanting to fight the king in addition to his association with a Cult of the Dragon Below.

Investigating the clerk Blade found 3 more vials marked as black lotus poison. A militia soldier told him that the 'clerk' must have been a Brelish spy because this poison is incredibly strong and very expensive. Blade kept the vials of poison for future use. Checking the timetables for when the next train will arrive Blade found a note mentioning that regular lightning rail service between Vathirond and Starilaskur has been suspended until further notice because of the unrest in that part of Breland. They searched the station and found a cellar that was originally for the clerk to live in but had been taken over by the Brelish agent. In this room was a note for the agent letting him know there will be one last lightning rail coming in special to move a division of troops in to reinforce the region and this would be the very last lightning rail for the time being. Upstairs they found two rooms that appeared to be used as an inn which the station also doubled as under normal circumstances. Based off the information everyone had they estimated they only had an hour or two before the last lightning rail arrive. Beyond that they found a storeroom with some food though it wasn't full and also some barrels of beer.

After Zergiot seemed to be comfortable and at ease talking with the goblinoids they lowered their voices, looked at him shrewdly, and asked him what he was doing here. Zergiot, was uncertain how to answer. He wanted to continue to increase the myth of his heroic importance but was also scared that doing so would keep him in dangerous situations. While he considered how to answer the goblins he heard a quiet buzzing from his pocket that he determined was coming from the palantir he was still carrying. He surreptitiously slipped it into his collar where he could hear it without the goblins being aware of what he was doing. From it he heard someone claiming to be an agent working for Moriarty. The agent told him that Moriarty wants The Lurching Tower empire to grow and a goblin rebellion would help with that. The agent also warned Zergiot that not doing what Moriarty wants would be... unwise. This threat helped Zergiot make up his mind and he told the goblins he was preparing to march his army west to take the fight to the king and he was looking for allies to help him in the fight. The goblins looked at him and asked him what was in it for them. The voice in the palantir told Zergiot that these goblinoids were primarily members of the Dhakaani tribe and dreamed of somehow resurrecting the ancient Dhakaani empire. Zergiot proposed that if they work together to overthrow the king of Breland that afterwards they would divide the territory and the goblins could found New Dhakaani in their section while Zergiot maintained 'his' empire in the other. The goblins chatted amongst themselves a bit then pulled out a map of Khorvaire demanding to know exactly what they would be getting. Moriarty's agent warned Zergiot that the goblins were shrewd hagglers and also that if Zergiot didn't at least try to haggle they would suspect he has an ulterior motive and not trust him.

Blade begins giving orders to everyone. He has Buddy dress up as the clerk while Blade himself pretends to be the clerks servant. They find about 8 suits of clothing throughout the building and dress 8 of the the militia members in it rather then the militia uniform they normally wear. The militia in civilian clothing would stay in the front room of the station pretending to be patrons eating, drinking, and waiting for the lightning rail. Dave and as many members of the militia that would fit hid in the cellar while the rest of the militia hid in the rooms upstairs. He put the black lotus poison in one of the barrels of beer. Although he knew it would be diluted a little bit his plan was to welcome the soldiers when they disembarked at the station, offer them the poisoned beer and once as many of them were either killed or at least made sick by the poison he would say the codeword and the militia would jump out of hiding to kill the troops. Blade and Buddy would make a dash for the lightning rail itself to capture it intact. Everyone knew their part and got ready. An hour passed and they heard a loud rumble as the lightning rail approached. Everyone tried to remain calm to avoid tipping the soldiers off. With a roar the lightning rail barreled past the station without even slowing. Blade rushed out to watch it vanish in the distance as it continued toward Vathirond. Realizing that apparently the troops were being sent to reinforce Vathirond rather then try to retake The Lurching Tower there was nothing left to do but return since it was obvious there would never be another lightning rail in the foreseeable future. Disappointed the party began marching back to The Lurching Tower.

The goblins initially proposed to Zergiot diving Breland into northern and southern sections stating they wanted their territory to border Darguun since that was already goblin territory. They drew a line across the map going directly through Starilaskur citing since they would be working together in this city it would make sense to divide it. Zergiot realized that obviously once they were done working together he would only control a small portion of Breland while they would control almost all of it including most of the major cities. A successful sense motive also told him the goblins weren't just dividing Breland but were dividing the continent itself and were expecting Zergiot's empire to stay completely out of the south including Zilargo and Valenar which they planned on conquering after Breland using the combined power of Darguun and conquered Breland. Zergiot drew another line on the map at an angle so that it more evenly bisects Breland but made certain that Sharn was just on his side of the border.
The goblins were outraged, "Ja'shaarat is our city, goblins built it thousands of years ago! It must be ours again!".
Zergiot then drew a new line that gave him more territory but put Sharn firmly on the goblins side. They talked it between themselves for a bit and then finally agreed they had a deal. The goblins pulled out a dagger and demanded that the contract be sealed in the goblin fashion. Moriarty's agent warned him that the this was a magic dagger that when cut across the palm of two parties who had just made an agreement it would seal them together. If the contract was broken then the person who broke the contract would die. The agent also warned that goblin leaders frequently would try to have a slave agree to the contract for them so that if (when) the contract was broken only the slave would die. Zergiot noticed that the goblin that came forward to bind the contract with him was much younger then all the other elders at the table with him. Suspecting he was getting scammed, but seeing no better alternatives, Zergiot agreed to the contract and cut his hand with the dagger.

Arriving back at The Lurching Tower morale was low and many of the Militia agreed that it was probably best for someone else besides Blade to be in charge. Knowing that he still needed to focus on Sharn, Blade decided taking out Vathirond in a frontal assault was probably the best option. He would be able to get reinforcements from the Bladelands and also claim a lightning rail since the troop transport would be there. The problem of course is the fact Vathirond just got a major troop reinforcement and he knew it might not be possible to conquer even if he could convince the leader to take the entire force. He decided to scout Vathirond and after seeing it make a decision on what to do next. After consulting with the militia leader he took Dave and 60 militia members and started marching towards Vathirond. Buddy was still ill and remained behind at The Lurching Tower

After agreeing to the contract Zergiot and the goblin leaders started planning how to take Starilaskur. Assuming that Zergiot had more command experience then the elders they let him take the lead but provided him with local information on the city which they were more familiar with. They showed him a map and pointed out where Little Darguun was located near the southeast part of the city. He then pointed out another section of the city towards the the southwest that was the warehouse district, this is also where the lightning rail was. Because all traffic east had stopped the warehouse district wasn't nearly as busy it usually was and practically abandoned. They then pointed out another section of the city in the central east part of the city and said it was the inner city, the inner city is where most of the nobility and leadership was located. The inner city was separated by the rest of the city by walls and gates. They then also pointed out the command center for the city watch which was just to the north, but outside of, the inner city. These were relatively small parts of the city and most of the rest of the city was homes and businesses. They mentioned that with the unrest the city watch had pulled most of it's forces into the inner city and surrounding Little Darguun. The goblins reported that they saw some patrols on the streets in the rest of the city but they were very infrequent these days due to lack of manpower. However any individual goblins leaving Little Darguun immediately attracted attention and would usually be followed by a watch patrol. If the goblins were to simply revolt and attack then the watch would probably bring their full force down from the inner city and wipe them out. The nobles in the inner city didn't like the goblins and the goblins believed the nobles are looking for an excuse to wipe out Little Darguun. The goblins also mentioned that the city's entire gnome population all left the day before yesterday but the goblins don't know why. The gnomes had lived all through the city instead of just one neighborhoods like the goblins so there wasn't an empty neighborhood but there were a higher amount of abandoned shops and businesses then normal. Zergiot asked about the sewer network. The goblins said they were very familiar and comfortable with the sewers and that was how they've collected some of the information on the status of the city. They said that for some reason there are three different sewers systems completely disconnected from each other. There was one for the inner city itself, and the other two sewer system were divided between the north and south halves of the city. Zergiot asked about if there were any alchemy shops. The goblins told him all the ones they could think of had been run by gnomes and so were currently abandoned. Zergiot asked if the goblins knew what the Brelish armies response to what had happened was. The goblins told Zergiot that a special troop transport had passed through on the lightning rail heading towards The Lurching Tower and Vathirond but they haven't seen any more troops besides that and haven't heard more then rumor of what the army is doing.

Zergiot pointed out that their first priority was to capture the lightning rail first because so long as it remained open Breland could deliver troops at any time and if they controlled it then they could bring militia from The Lurching Tower in if necessary. He also pointed out that if the city watch could be eliminated then the nobles would have no protection so eliminating the watch is the 2nd priority.  He decided to have the goblins steal as much explosive from the abandoned alchemical shops as they could within an hour while all the non-fighting goblins (women, children, etc.) escaped out the city through secret tunnels the goblins had made long ago. He then ordered that most of the fighting goblins would go into the sewers and go capture the lightning rail. A 2nd smaller group of goblins would make their way to the watch house, while the remaining smallest group would stay in Little Darguun. He would go through the sewers by himself and come out somewhere in the middle of the city. He would find the nearest watch patrol he could and demand to be taken to the watch commander reporting that he has information of an imminent goblin uprising as well as information on the wanted rebel leader Zergiot. He would then convince the commander to send the full force of the watch into Little Darguun. The group of goblins that stayed behind in Little Darguun would pretend to riot when they saw the full force of the watch arrive but would fight defensively and keep falling back to focus more on keeping the watch occupied over killing them. Once the watch was deep within Little Darguun they would light it on fire and try to keep the watch trapped inside and have them burn up in Little Darguun. Although most of Starilaskur was made of stone, Little Darguun was more of a shanty town and the buildings here were mostly made of wood. While this was going on the first group would attack the lightning rail station and eliminate any House Orien guards maintaining it. Once the goblins had captured a lightning rail they would load it up with the explosives and take it west as far as they could and then detonate it destroying the conductor stones the lightning rail travels on and preventing the Brelish army from using the lightning rail to transport troops to Starilaskur. Zergiot himself would find an entrance to the sewers in the watch house to let the 2nd group of goblins in and together they would capture the watch house with the priority of killing the watch commander. With most of the watch burned up in Little Darguun, the watch leaders eliminated, and no easy reinforcements coming on the lightning rail the nobles would be easy to eliminate if they didn't surrender. The goblins thought it was a good idea but pointed out that the watch was in the north sewer system which wasn't connected to the southern sewer system that could be accessed from Little Darguun. Zergiot noticed that the line between sewer systems happened to pass through the warehouse district that the goblins had mentioned was practically abandoned. He suggested that the goblins make their way to the warehouse district, come of the sewers there, then make their way to the nearest entrance to the north sewer system and then go to the watch house. The goblins realized that was a good idea and it was unlikely anyone was there and if they did there would be so few they could probably be silenced.

Blade and his group marched at a steady pace to Vathirond, it took them a few days to arrive. The day before he arrived at Vathirond his group noticed a large amount of smoke and dust rising behind them. Blade sent a scout back to see what happened but the scout never returned. When they arrived at Vathirond Blade immediately sent everyone to scout the area and specifically to see the status of Vathirond, it's defenses, it's opening, any weaknesses, and also the state of the lightning rail. It took a few hours for him to get a preliminary report but what he learned wasn't good. Vathirond's proximity to the Mournland meant that the eastern 2/3 of the city had been abandoned and the occupied 1/3 had been well fortified to protect against things coming out of the mists. It was obvious that the people of Vathirond were expecting and had prepared for a siege. The walls were already thicker then normal for most cities to protect against things coming out of the mists and all the gates and tunnels had been recently sealed up, including the tunnel the lightning rail normally went through. The walls were heavily manned and would fire arrows at anyone that got close enough. Blade set up camp in the ruined eastern part of the city. He had his troops search the ruins for anything possibly of use but the ruins had long since been picked over years ago. That night he had one of the militia soldiers follow him out into the ruins. He took the soldier into a ruined building a ways away from the camp and then then killed him. He took the body apart in order to learn about human anatomy. On the march to Vathirond he had realized that while Dave was a very useful tool, he ultimately wasn't warforged and decided that maybe if he learned more about human anatomy that he might learn a way to somehow convert people to warforged. He didn't learn anything useful from the autopsy and returned to the camp alone in the morning.

Zergiot went through the sewers and came out in the middle of the city. It didn't take him long to encounter a watch patrol. While they weren't certain if they believed his story or not they did determine they should take him back to the watch house to let their commander decide what to do. Zergiot claimed to have been a guard from The Lurching Tower that escaped the massacre there. The captain said a few other guards had also escaped and reported a wizard named Zergiot, a nameless man, a nameless warforged, and an ogre were those primarily responsible for the death of the entire camp. Zergiot, his desire for glory overcoming his cowardice, said that the other guards were partially right but he personally saw that it was the amazingly incredible warrior Zergiot who almost singlehandedly conquered The Lurching Tower on his own (curse that handsome devil!). The commander believed Zergiot's bluff and told an aide to send a priority message to King Boranel letting him know what he had just learned. Zergiot told the commander there was more, he had learned that Zergiot is planning to spread the revolution by inciting the goblins here in Starilaskur to attack the barricades around Little Darguun as the beginning of his plan to conquer Starilaskur. Zergiot told the commander that he believes if the barricades around Little Darguun are held that it will disrupt Zergiot's plan. Again the commander believes Zergiot and sends an order to send almost all guards currently in the watch house and on patrol to the barricades around Little Darguun. Zergiot asked if he was needed for anything more and that if he wasn't he'd appreciate the opportunity to use the facilities and clean up a bit. The commander understood, gave him permission to leave, and gave directions to the nearest restroom. Zergiot slowly walked his way there, seeing a large number of watch guards leaving, apparently on their way to Little Darguun. When he reached the restroom he spoke a codeword into the toilet and he soon saw a goblin face looking up from out of the toilet at him. The goblin saw Zergiot, signaled back and a ladder was brought up, put into position, and goblins started to climb out. They mentioned there was another restroom on the other side of the watch house and part of this group would be coming out there.

Zergiot said he had obtained the trust of the watch and had free movement around the complex. He was going to check if the watch were already on their way to Little Darguun and see how many were left. He confirmed there were a lot less watch guards then before but still more then he would have liked. He used his magic to successfully cast a fog spell in the middle of the courtyard to inhibit the the watch's ability to see and then signaled for the goblins to attack. The watch guards were suspicious of the fog suddenly appearing out of nowhere and he could hear them muttering about mages. Goblins started pouring out the restroom, many of them went into the mist while others scampered up the walls of the buildings of the watch house. As the restroom emptied more goblins started climbing out the toilet as fast as they could. As they came up they mentioned to Zergiot that they had sent the word to attack to the goblins at the other restroom as well. As the goblins ambushed some of the watch the alarm was raised and the entire watch realized they were under attack. A few guards saw Zergiot near the goblins and shot some crossbows at them. Zergiot ran into the mist to be safe. The mist was chaos as guards and goblins were flailing almost blindly at each other in it. Zergiot fought his way to the door of the building the commander had met him in hoping the commander was still inside. The mist went right up to the door. As Zergiot opened he spotted the commander and successfully fired off a few magic missiles at him. A few goblins had followed Zergiot into the building and a fight between Zergiot, the commander, a few goblins, and a couple guards. Outside in the rest of the watch house the goblins were getting slaughtered by the watch guards however the goblins superior numbers started to win out. The guards weren't able to get close enough to the restroom doors to block them and stop the goblins from swarming in. It was a long battle but eventually Zergiot managed to kill the commander and eventually the goblins killed all the guards in the watch house. The goblins he fought with were highly impressed by his combat prowess and began praising him. When he got reports from the other two groups he found they had both succeeded. The goblins in Little Darguun took heavy casualties but managed to lure the guards in and entrap them while they burned it down and killed them. The goblins that went to the lightning rail station only encountered some House Orien workers and no guards. They captured a lightning rail, filled it with the explosives, took it westbound. They didn't return for a few days but when they did they reported that they traveled to the turnoff to Thrane, unloaded the explosives off the lightning rail then detonated the explosives. They confirmed that the junction was pretty wrecked and they were certain no lightning rails will be traveling through that junction until House Cannith repairs it.
